10-month-old tests positive for methamphetamine, two arrested

On Behalf of | Feb 16, 2013 | Firm News |

Two residents of Rosepine, Louisiana have been arrested after a 10-month-old child tested positive for methamphetamine. According to the Vernon Parish sheriff, investigators from the Narcotics Task Force were contacted by the staff of Beauregard Memorial Hospital regarding the child. The child’s mother explained that she was in a house where the drug had been used, which might have resulted in the child’s exposure to the narcotic. The mother also reportedly confessed to receiving and using the narcotic in the past. The mother is under arrest on drug charges and has been booked for cruelty to a juvenile and possession of methamphetamine.

Investigators, with search warrant in hand, went to the house where the narcotic had been used and found a 55-year-old man allegedly in possession of 1.75 ounces of methamphetamine with a value of $5,760. The man told the police that the child was in the same room in which he, along with others, had smoked methamphetamine. The man has been charged with possessing methamphetamine with the intent to distribute, possessing marijuana, possessing drug paraphernalia, illegal possession of firearms while in possession of controlled dangerous substances, possession of schedule IV with the intent to distribute and distribution of methamphetamine. It was also discovered that the man was out on bond for previous methamphetamine charges at the time of the incident.

According to state and federal laws, possession of any controlled substance is a criminal offense. If the drug possession charges are proved in state or federal court, the accused may face serious consequences, such as a lengthy prison sentence, along with heavy fines. That is why it is so important for a defendant to immediately begin crafting a strong criminal defense strategy.
