Man faces criminal charges after fight with brother

For most people in Baton Rouge, the thought of committing an act that will result in an arrest never occurs to them. Because of that, they're not concerned about the prospect of needing assistance with criminal defense. However, it only takes one unexpected incident to result in criminal charges being filed. Whether it's someone who obeys the law as a matter of course or a person who has had brushes with the legal system in the past, in a flash, a person can be confronted with the long-term consequences of being charged with a criminal act.

A 39-year-old man was arrested on assault charges and battery charges after a recent confrontation with his brother. In the altercation, the man held a gun to his brother's head and neck and made threats saying that he was going to kill him. The two argued and then fought. In the fight, the man used the gun as a weapon, hitting his brother on the arm, neck and face. Law enforcement spoke to the injured brother at the hospital where he had wounds, cuts, a broken finger and a possible broken hand. The arrest was made at the emergency room.

When arrested for any kind of criminal activity, one of the most important decisions that a defendant has to make relates to criminal defense. A conviction on assault charges and battery charges can lead to hefty fines, a jail sentence and long-term consequences that can extend for years. Failing to secure competent criminal defense can make the penalties far worse than they would be otherwise. In some cases, it's possible to negotiate a plea agreement to reduce the severity of the charges as well as their accompanying penalties. Regardless of the circumstances surrounding the arrest, it is imperative to know how to navigate the legal system to avoid making matters worse.

Although the charges and allegations in this case are serious, the defendant still has the right to a strong defense. With the penalties he faces if he's convicted, he should look into all of his options for defending himself against the charges.
