Tennessee’s most-wanted criminal arrested in Louisiana

On Behalf of | Sep 14, 2017 | Criminal Defense |

Louisiana and her neighboring states often cooperate in tracking and arresting persons wanted for serious crimes. A recent example of this cooperation occurred in New Orleans when police arrested a man for shoplifting, only to discover that he was one of Tennessee’s 10 most-wanted criminals and was facing serious criminal charges in the Volunteer State.

According to Tennessee officials, the man and his girlfriend are accused of kidnapping and attempted murder in connection with an incident that occurred in June 2017. The couple are charged with kidnapping a woman and forcing her to lure a supposed friend from his residence.

When the man opened his door, one member of the fugitive couple allegedly shot him. The couple allegedly fled the scene of the crime and have been running ever since. An official with the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office said that the couple was spotted in several states. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said that the couple traveled by hitchhiking and freight train.

The male member of the couple was arrested by a New Orleans police officer and charged with attempted theft from a local grocery store. The man gave police a fake name, but an Orleans Parish detective, who is also a member of the U.S. Marshal’s Fugitive Task Force, saw him.

The detective recognized the man and passed along his identity and the news of his capture to the Marshal’s Service. The man will be held in the Orleans Parish jail until his extradition hearing in late September.

The suspect faces a daunting gantlet of criminal proceedings, including the extradition hearing in New Orleans, arraignment on local charges, and, of course, arraignment and possible trial on whatever criminal charges may be filed in Tennessee. Anyone who is charged with crimes in two or more states may wish to seek advice from a knowledgeable criminal defense attorney about extradition and the criminal procedures in the different states.
